Airdrie Thunder are first on the golf course!
The Mountainview Colts deserved to move on to the next round of the playoffs and Airdrie Thunder did little to make it difficult for them. After the first period of game one, the Colts took controll of this series and it was obvious that they wanted to win more than Airdrie did. The Colts are to be congratulated for their effort and Airdrie THunder wishes them well in the next playoff round against the Red Deer Vipers

Airdrie Thunder  4
Mountainview Colts 5

Airdrie Thunder has a second period collapse!
Team Thunder got off to a good start in the first game of  the elimination round as they jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead. The Colts were guilty of some undisciplined play and spent a good deal of the first period in the penalty box. Airdrie was able to take advantage of the Colts misfortune, however the tables turned quickly, and Airdrie spent the second period, beating a path to the penalty box and this time the Colts took advantage, except that they managed to get the puck into the net on four occassions thus ending the second period with a 2 - 4 goal advantage. Team Thunder made a valiant effort at a comeback in  the third period, however only after the Colts had added their fifth and ultimately winning goal. Two late goals made the score presentable and caused some anxious moments for the Cots fans, however the game came to and end before Airdrie was able to send the game to OT
Travis Wallan was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Harrison Harper was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie Thunder 5   (OT)
Stettler Ligthning  5

Airdrie Thunder has a third period collapse!
Airdrie had this game well in control for forty minutes; then complacancy set in and the Lightning made a huge comeback to send the game to overtime. Team Thunder dominated the first two periods, building a 4 - 1 lead while outshooting the guests by a massive 45 to 9 margin and then they relaxed in the third period and the game totally reversed with Stettler outscoring Airdrie by 4 -1 to steal a point from Team Thunder. The overtime period was dominated again by Airdrie but no goals resulted.

Tuesday Jan. 31/12
Airdrie Thunder 4
Blackfalds Ford Wranglers  4

No decision in Blackfalds!
Team Thunder played an excellent game on Tuesday night in Blackfalds and so did the Wranglers, thus the game was fought to a draw! This was an important game for Airdrie to win and one that the Wranglers couldn't afford to lose, and with those parameters, the Wranglers ended up the victors. Both teams played hard and the score was close throughout, however Team Thunder grabbed the lead at 4 - 3 and it looked like they might pull out the win, but the Wranglers evened the score again with only 49 seconds left in the third period. The overtime frame settled nothing and so the gamre ended knotted at four each.

Airdrie Thunder 5  (ot)
Red Deer Vipers  4

Servere Thunderstorm strikes Vipers in Red Deer!
Team Thunder went to a fight and a hockey game errupted!  The road trip to Red Deer resulted in two points for Airdrie Thunder but it took a lot of fighting and variouis penalties to do it. All nine goals scored in this game were scored on the powerplay. The Vipers got the early lead and had a 1 - 2 first period advantage; Team Thunder roared back in the second and after forty minutes they enjoyed a 4 - 2 edge. The third period was time for Airdrie to particpate in "occupy penalty box" and Red Deer tied the game and sent it to overtime. After just 21 seconds of overtime action, Alex Hustad ended the carnage with the game winner.

Friday Jan. 27/12
Airdrie Thunder 6
Ponoka Stampeders 1

Team Thunder blasts six past the Stamps goalie!
Airdrie Thunder took a while to get a comfortable lead on the pesky Stampeders on Friday night in Airdrie. Although Team Thunder badly outplayed the team from Ponoka for the entire sixty minutes, it wasn't until the third period that they finally felt they had the win in their grasp. Airdrie outshot Ponoka by a whopping 53 to 11. The game would have been more one sided except for the outstanding job done by the Stampeder's goaltender.
Kristian Petit was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Alex Hustad was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Not enough compete in Three Hills!
Team Thunder played well most of the time, but when they had a lapse in their level of play, the Thrashers put the puck in the net. Airdrie outshot the Thrashers by a 31 - 24 margin, however the production as a result of the shots just wasn't there.

Blackfalds gets wrangled in Airdrie

Friday Jan. 20/12
Airdrie Thunder 4
Blackfalds Ford Wranglers  1

Team Thunder skates to victory at home!
Team Thunder played one of their better games on Friday night in Airdrie and the result was an impressive win over the Blackfalds Wranglers. Airdrie had built up a four goal advantage before the Wranglers managed to get on the scoreboard; that in spite of the fact that Airdrie had to kill off a few penalties during that time including a 3 on 5 disadvantage. However the Wranglers had their problems with penalties, and Team Thunder took advantage by firing two power play goals, both of them in the first period.
This was a very good game to watch and all the fans that missed this one missed a fast, exciting game between two very closely matched teams.
Travis Wallan was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Marcus Cheng was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Friday Jan. 13/12
Airdrie Thunder 4
Red Deer Vipers  5

Bad start costs the Thunder!
A first period seven minute penalty set the tone for this game and gave the momentum to the visiting Vipers who were quick to take advantage. Although the Vipers didn't score on that powerplay, Team Thunder never got on track until the third period when they were behind by two goals. Red Deer outscored Airdrie by counts of 1 - 2 in each of the first two periods to take a 2 - 4 lead into the final frame and although Airdrie reversed the trend and outscored the Vipers 2 - 1 in the third, it wasn't quite enough to get back to even.
Matt Flette was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Ashton Sheen was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

1) Ryan Gould from Hounjet and Flette

Friday Jan.  6/12
Airdrie Thunder 3
Mountainview Colts  3

No decision in first game of 2012!
The first game of 2012 showed a lot of rust had gathered on the Thunderous Team system. The passing was off, the timing was off and overall the game was off just enough to make for a sloppy game. The work ethic was still evident, but it wasn't enough to earn that extra point for Team Thunder. Airdrie got off to a relatively good start, jumping out to a 2 - 0 lead, but penalties and a strong push back by the Colts in the second period turned the tide and at the end of two periods the Colts held a 2 - 3 lead. Airdrie tied the game in the third and the overtime decided nothing and so the game ended with the teams sharing the two points.
Alex Hustad was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Taylor Crossley was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie Thunder 3
Stettler Lightning 2

Airdrie wins in the third at home!
Team Thunder dominated on the shot clock but had to come from behind to get the win on Friday night in Airdrie. Team Thunder came out strong in the first period; badly outshooting the Lightning but the had nothing to show for their efforts after twenty minutes of play. They got into penalty trouble in the second period and the Lighting took advantage and jumped ahead by two goals leaving Airdrie looking at a 0 - 2 score going into the third period. Team Thunder made a big rally in the final frame scoring three times to finally get in front on the scoreboard and logging the two points

Airdrie wins by a landslide on the road!
Team Thunder dominated on the shot clock and also on the scoreboard and it was a game that they still could have played better. The second game in two nights caused a little drag on the Thunder legs, but they had enough to garner another two point night. The special teams came up big tonight with two of the seven goals coming by way of the powerplay and one on a shorthanded play.

Team Thunder wins an impotant game at home!
Airdrie Thunder ground out a hard fought victory at home on Friday night against the North Division leaders. The game was fast and exciting with Airdrie getting a 2 - 0 first period lead and battling their way through the next two periods to solidify the two points. Airdrie made things difficult for themselves by taking a minor penalty when the Wranglers were trying to tie the game with less than two minutes to play in the thrid period and their goalie pulled in favour of the extra attacker. Fortunately Team Thunder managed to hang onto their lead and went to the dressing room after heaving a collective sigh of releif.

Team Thunder wins second one on the road!
Team Thunder ground out another hard fought road victory in Stettler on Sunday afternoon. The weekend was one of the most successful for Team Thunder in recent memory; three wins in three nights; two of the wins were on the road.  This shows what this team is capable of, and if they apply themselves as a team, they will go a long way this season. Today's game was highlighted by good defensive play and an effective offensive push to control the game and solidify the win

Team Thunder wins one on the road!
Team Thunder ground out a hard fought road vistory in Red Deer on Saturday night. This game was made more difficult by the fact that it was their second game in twenty four hours. The last week has seen a much improved Airdrie Thunder team; they have been playing much more of a "team" game than they had over the past month or so. The new attitude has resulted in a couple of wins. It's not over yet though as they get back at it again tommorow for their third game of the weekend. That is going to be another good test of the new attitude Thunder..

Airdrie Thunder rushes to a victory in Airdrie!
Team Thunder scored their first goal after just 48 seconds of play in the first period.  They then went on to add two goals in each of the second and third periods to log the two points in the win column! Airdrie won this game by using a relentless forecheck, a determined backchecking game, and by logging lots of shots on goal to wear down the only goalie the Stampeders had. Shots in this game were decidedly one sided as Airdrie took 52 shots on goal, while the Stampeders managed only 15 shots on the Airdrie net.

Special teams are the differance in Airdrie!
Team Thunder scored goals with the power-play, when shorthanded and even strength to overcome the Mountainview Colts on Friday night in Airdrie! This wasn't the best game to watch as there were far too many penalties, but the special teams got a chance to show their stuff; including a huge 3 on 5 Colts power play for 4 minutes in the third period. Team Thunder managed to battle through all of the adversity and come out of the evening with the much needed two points.

Friday Nov. 18/11
Airdrie Thunder 4
Red Deer Vipers  5

Defensive lapses prove costly!
Team Thunder has a problem keeping up with the scoring of the opposition! Once again on Friday night in Airdrie, Team Thiunder was playing "catch-up" all night!  Red Deer notched the first two goals of the game, but Airdrie got the next two and evened the score at 2 each. However Red Deer once again scored the next two goals. This time Airdrie only got one back before the Vipers struck Airdrie with the winning goal. Airdrie playedf well most of the game, but defensive coverage mistakes are really hurting Team Thunder; it seems that just when Airdrie is really ready to grab the momentum, another defensive mistake results in the huge loss of offensive flow. If this team can get a good consistant flow to their game they will be hard to stop; but they better get it together soon; the season is wearing on!!

Team Thunder suffers second loss of the weekend!
Penalties hurt! Airdrie spent too much time in the sin bin on Sunday afternoon in Medicine Hat; their on ice transgressions resulted in a Cubs advantage that Team Thunder couldn't overcome. The game was underscored by a lack of effort by a majority of the Thunder players and this resulted in penalties and the penalties resulted in goals by the opposition. On the road discipline is a must in order to be a championship team..

Thrashed in Airdrie

Friday Nov. 11/11
Airdrie Thunder 3
Three Hills Thrashers 4

Team Thunder suffers devasting defensive collapse!
Airdrie Thunder played 40 minutes of excellent hockey. They were quick on the transition play; they cleared rebounds from in front of their net; and they poured on the offence. All this hard work resulted in a well deserved 2 - 1 lead after forty minutes of play. Unfortunately they came out in the third period and let the Thrashers dictate the pace of the game; this questionable strategy resulted in 3 goals for the Thrashers and one goal for Airdrie in the final twenty minutes. The defensive collapse was especially hard to take when the Thrashers scored the winning goal on a short-handed effort. When Team Thunder jumped into a third period 3 - 1 lead they played like they only had to fill in the rest of the period before they notched the win; however the Thrasher decided to play the full sixty minutes and won the game by scoring 3 goals in the final four minutes of play!
Aidan Crowther was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game, and Ashton Sheen was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie played this game more as a team than any other game this season and the results ended up on the scoreboard. Friday Nov.  4/11
Airdrie Thunder 3
Cochrane Generals  4

Last minute goal defeats Team Thunder!
Airdrie Thunder battled from behind to finally tie the score at 3 with two third period goals, only to have the Generals salt away the game when they scored the winning goal with only 42 seconds remaining in the period!
Airdrie lost this game by allowing the Generals to score two devastating goals; the first was after only 54 seconds of play in the game and the second was with only 42 seconds remaining in regulation time. Team Thunder has to get more responsible defensively at those types of critical times in the games if they want to be a playoff bound team!
Kritstian Petit was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Tannor Kocis was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Team Thunder travelled to Didsbury for a rare midweek encounter against the much improved Mountainview Colts. Finally the buzzer rang to end the game and overtime didn't result in any decision

Friday Oct. 28/11
Airdrie Thunder 3
Strathmore Wheatland Kings  8

Team Thunder has no punch against the Kings!
Airdrie Thunder couldn't stop the puck from going into their own net on Friday night in Airdrie! In spite of outshooting Strathmore by a wide margin; the Kings got the most out of their shots and embarassed the Thunder in their own building. Airdrie had momentum; had lots of scoring chances; but the Kings had pressure on the puck at all times all over the ice and forced Team Thunder into lots of mistakes. The Kings deserve credit for not making similar mistakes when Airdrie put pressure on them. When they did make a mistake; their goalie managed to bail them out!
Alex Hustad was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Harrison Harper was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie Thunder 9
Banff Academy Bears  1

Bears hibernating while Thunder was scoring!
Team Thunder couldn't be accused of not taking enough shots in this game as the beleagured Bears goaltender was badly overworked in all three periods and stopped a total of 50 shots. Fortunately Team Thunder blasted 9 shots past the hard working Bears goalie. As indicated by the shots on goal, this game was controlled completely by Airdrie, and the Bears were never a threat to the high flying Thunder scorers
Kristian Petit was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Ryan Gould was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie Thunder 4
High River Flyers  0

Flyer's scrorers are grounded in Airdrie!
Team Thunder got on the scoreboard first with the winning goal at 9:39 of the first period; they then added three insurance goals to earn their first shut-out of the year. Airdrie poured on the offense in the first period and maintained the pressure when they were 5 on 5 throughout the game. The Flyers were only able to apply offensive pressure when Team Thunder was shorthanded. The Airdrie penalty kill was up to the challenge, even when they had to kill a late game 3 on 5 disadvantage.
Andrew Bergmann was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Adam Griffiths was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Bisons trample Team Thunder at home!

Friday Oct. 7/11
Airdrie Thunder 2
Okotoks Bisons  5

This period outburst puts the Bisons in front!
Team Thunder got on the scoreboard first with a powerplay goal at the 8:31 mark of the first period, but they couldn't find the range when they were playing five-on-five.The second Airdrie goal also came on the powerplay midway through the third period. Meanwhile the Bisons managed to notch two second period goals and three third period goals to round out the victory. The noticable differance between these two teams was the willingness by the Bisons to put the puck 'on the net' from anywhere on the ice. Team Thunder on the other hand seemed to want to get into the goal crease before they fired a shot. The game was fast and exciting to watch and the fans that were on hand were well entertained for the small cost of a night out at a junior hockey game; its too bad more fans haven't found their way to the arena in order to support the local hockey heros. The goaltending at both ends of the ice was excellent and overworked, the only blemish on the game was the score!
Travis Wallan was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Trevor Schwass was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Friday Sept. 30/11
Airdrie Thunder 6
Coaldale Copperheads 4

Team Thunder puts together a good third period!
Airdrie Thunder got a fast start on the scoreboard as they notched their first goal at the 18 second mark, but they didn't follow it up and had to make a come from behind effort to finally log the two points. The Copperheads answered the early Airdrie goal with the next two goals and forced Team Thunder to play catch-up all night. Airdrie tied the game at two goals each before the end of the first period. The Copperheads  scored the next two goals and again forced Team Thunder to try to respond. Airdrie rose to the challenge and made the game close with their third goal of the game before the second period ended. The third period was too much for Coaldale and Airdrie finally got into the lead and won the game by scoring three unanswered third period goals.
Matt Flette was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Taylor Crossley was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Sunday Sept. 25/11
Airdrie Thunder 2
Medicine Hat Cubs  2

Another slow start costs Team Thunder at home!
Airdrie Thunder looked mentally tired on Sunday afternoon and once again they had to make a comeback attempt. The Cubs jumped out to a 0 - 2 lead before Airdrie found the mark for the first time. Three games in three nights could not be used as an excuse because the Cubs played 3 in 3 as well, however the Thunder passes and shots toward the net were just a little off the mark for the first forty minutes. Finally in the third period Airdrie's snippers found the net and they managed to salvage the one point.
The overtime period settled nothing, in spite of the fact that Airdrie enjoyed a full two minute power play during which they had a chance to end the game by depositing the puck into the wide open net, however the shot went high and wide!
Ryan Preston was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Taylor Crossley was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Slow start to the new season for Airdrie

Friday Sept. 23/11
Airdrie Thunder 4
Three Hills Thrashers 5

First period disaster costs Team Thunder at home!
Friday night's season home opener for Airdrie Thunder did not go as planned to say the least!  A three goal, first period outburst by the Three Hills Thrashers was not what was outlined by the coaching staff when the game plan for the home opener was formulated. Unfortunately a lot of Team Thunder players were about twenty minutes late for the start of the new season, and when they did get the skates going they couldn't overcome the huge hole they dug for themselves. When you put aside the first twenty minutes, Airdriie outscored the Thrashers by a count of 4 - 2; however it takes sixty minutes of solid play to win a game in this league and that lesson had better hit home quickly.
As indicated by the score, this game was not really well played, Airdrie just did not have any finish in the offensive zone, several times on great scoring chances, the Airdrie shooters missed the net; on other occassions the passes were just not close thus turning the puck over to the opposition. The only bright spot on the evening was that after the first two penalty kill situations when the Thrashers scored both times; Team Thunder did a great job off killing all of the Thrashers power plays opportunities..
Ben Sherven was named Paul's Pizza offensive player of the game and Doug Fraser was named Paul's Pizza defensive player of the game.

Airdrie Thunder travelled to Cochrane on Sunday afternoon to match hockey skills with the Cochrane Generals. Team Thunder played a strong defensive game and left the Generals scoreless! Airdrie was able to thwart any offensive chance the Generals could muster and finally found the winning goal in the second period. The third period was highlighted by Airdrie scoring four insurance markers to end out the game at 5 - 0.

Airdrie Thunder 2
Red Deer Vipers 4

Red Deer manages a win in Airdrie
Team Thunder and the Red Deer Vipers battled in Airdrie on Friday night in the final home exhibition game of the year for Airdrie. This game, however was more about who could survive the rash of penalties in the best position. In this game the Red Deer Vipers managed to weather the penalty storm better than Airdire did.
Red Deer got on the scoreboard early with a goal that was scored from behind the goal line; they added their second goal mid-way through the first period on a powerplay opportunity. The second period belonged to Airdrie and they posted the next two goals; both of which were scored on the powerplay. so after two periods of play the scored was tied at two each. The Vipers turned the momentum around in their favour during the third as they scored the final two goals of the game and completed the scoring for a final of 2 - 4.

September 13/11

Airdrie Thunder  12
Calgary Jr. B Canucks 1

Scorers had a field day in Calgary

Team Thunder's offence had their way with the Canucks on Tuesday evening in Calgary, and the defence got into the scoring act to as there were plenty of goals to go around. The Canucks were no match for Airdrie in this game. The Airdrie forwards victimized the Calgary defence time and time again and the results went up on the scoreboard. The powerplay scored on almost every chance they had and the penalty kill worked on all but one occassion. Overall this was a good game for the confidence of the new players and should result in some better play when the competition gets a little more vigorous.

Airdrie outscores Red Deer in exhibition play
Airdrie Thunder and the Red Deer Vipers met in Red Deer on Sunday afternoon to see how their new teams would look for the upcoming season. If today's game was any indication; the goalies are going to have a long season!  This game had lots of offense, was fast and exciting, what it didn't have was defense, however the fans weren't complaining..

Friday Sept. 9, 2011
Airdrie Thunder 4
Blackfalds Ford Wranglers 8

Blackfalds dominates the scoreboard in Airdrie!

Team Thunder won the "shots-on-goal" game, but the Wranglers managed to get their shots into the net on a much higher rate of efficiency! The Wranglers looked like they had never been away from the rink after winning it all last season; their passing was on the mark; the shots on net were finding the holes and they played a patient , and confident game. Team Thunder looked like a group of players who weren't all that familiar with each other and as a result  their passes were sometimes off the mark and the shots on goal often missed the net ; hit the post or found the goalie's crest. In spite of the rusty look to Team Thunder, the real difference in the game came as a result of some glaring defensive lapses that resulted in break-away opportunities for Blackfalds; two of these lapses resulted in shorthanded goals for the Wranglers. This is an area that the coaches will address over the next few games and practises and I'm sure the defence will perform much better by the time the real season begins

Scoring Summary

First Period:
1) Ben Shervan from Wallan and Esposito
Second Period:
2) Mark Rollo from Shervan and Plesa
3) Ben Shervan from Rollo

Red / White Game 2011

Team Thunder hosts their annual Red / White game

Sept. 5/11
Team Thunder, Red  9
Team Thunder, White  7

Hockey season is never over for the coaches and managers of a hockey club . The selection camps are the results of the each year's recruiting season which culiminates in the annual Red/White game. Once again the Airdrie Thunder brass has been busy in the off-season bringing new talent into the fold; and this talent was on display for the first time on Monday's annual Red / White game.
Team White dominated for the first forty minutes of the game building a four goal lead at 7 - 3 as they went into the second intermission, but Team Red came storming back in the third frame to score six unanswered goals and run off with the victory.
This game featured a really quick pace that one would not expect from an intersquad game and there were plenty of excellent passing plays that resulted in goals or good scoring chances. The rookies that are trying out presented themselves very well, which inidcates the the future looks bright for Team Thunder.
Given the quality of hockey that was on display on Monday afternoon, it is apparent that Airdrie will have another competitive year in the Heritage Junior Hockey League once again. Fans should look foward to some great hockey on Friday nights and therefore should plan to head out to the arena for some inexpensive hockey entertainment.
